    Join us for an open, robust and vital discussion about the development and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.

     

    Offered via Zoom, the community discussion will be hosted by the Horizon Foundation, Howard County General Hospital, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and the Howard County Health Department, with support from County Executive Calvin Ball.

     

    The discussion will focus on the opportunities and challenges associated with COVID-19 vaccines currently approved or under development, and vaccine-distribution plans in Maryland and Howard County. A panel of experts will also explore how communities of color have experienced health injustices and suggest ways to address racial equity in decisions related to the vaccine and its distribution.

     

    The panel will include:

    ·         Dr. Ruth Karron, Professor and Director Johns Hopkins Vaccine Initiative, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

    ·         Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, President, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and participant in a local COVID-19 clinical trial

    ·         Dr. Maura Rossman, Howard County Health Officer

    ·         Moderators: Nikki H. Vernick, President and CEO, Horizon Foundation and Dr. Mohammed Shafeeq Ahmed, Interim President, Howard County General Hospital, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine

    Let GrandPad Bring Your Family Together this Winter

    November generally is a time of elections and family celebrations. We offer our thanks for the joys of life lived, and look forward with hope for peace, good health and safety. Celebrating alone is not ideal but is a reality for many of our seniors.  These are difficult times, but we can use technology to overcome the divide, keeping  our loved ones engaged  and healthy. 

    GrandPad is a creative way to overcome the prolonged separation forced upon us by COVID-19. It is specifically designed to be simple to use for seniors or anyone who is not comfortable with today’s cell phones or computers.  A simple tap on one of the GrandPad’s large icons allows the user to make a phone call (either audio or video), view photos or play games and music.  Emails are simple to create using voice recording and sent with a touch of a button.  The intuitive interface allows the user to tap on telehealth for doctor visits, or use Zoom to join group engagement activities with friends, neighbors or fellow residents. There is even a button to call The Option Group, so you can seamlessly reach your Care Coordinator. 

    The GrandPad is secure from scammers and telemarketers, only allowing authorized family members or providers to access the user.  The Option Group is committed to providing the GrandPad service to our clients.

    Bita Dayhoff: President of the Community Action Council of Howard County (CAC), which serves low-income residents through four core program areas including food assistance, energy and weatherization assistance, housing assistance, and early childhood education.

    Patrick Higgins: Co-founder of Howard Tech Advisors, a leading provider of technology services to business and non-profit customers in the Baltimore-Washington region.

    Jerry Reardon: Recently retired Director of Clinical Reporting Services for the Chesapeake Regional Information System for Patients (CRISP), a regional health information exchange (HIE) serving Maryland and the District of Columbia.
