Speakers: Kim Burton

Topic: Late Life Behavioral Health

About Our Speaker:

This presentation will offer insight to the unique circumstances that contribute to late life behavioral health problems such as depression, anxiety and substance use disorders. Too often, these issues go undetected and untreated until there is a major disruption or crisis. The stigma of mental illness MUST be replaced with the science-backed knowledge that we now have regarding life stressors and subsequent brain changes that influence behavior, quality of life and relationships. With proper understanding and action, needless suffering can end. In fact, we can be proactive in the protection of our mental health and forge a cultural shift in the treatment of behavioral health disorders for older Marylanders.

Kim Burton is the Director of Older Adult Programs for the Mental Health Association of Maryland where she has provided community and professional education regarding multiple aspects of late life mental health for 12 years. Kim Chairs the Maryland Coalition on Mental Health and Aging, maintains Maryland’s mental health and aging website and produces educational materials and training curriculum that is used for workforce development throughout Maryland.
